Manchester United failed to complete a January deal for Benfica winger Nicolas Gaitan after the club saw their £23million bid turned down, Talksport reports.
The 27-year-old has been an attacking target for United over the past few seasons, but despite being heavily linked with a transfer, a formal move never materialized.
Manager Louis van Gaal was once again ready to bring the Argentina international to Old Trafford last month, but saw their bid rejected after the Portuguese giants accepted an offer from Al Ahli.
However, Gaitan failed to reach an agreement with the UAE-based side as he was believed to be keen on remaining in Europe.
Al Ahli coach Cosmin Olaroiu admitted that their offer was accepted after they tabled a greater amount than that from the Red Devils.
“We made an offer of €35million, which Benfica accepted, since it was higher than the €30 million offered by Manchester United,” he said.
He has already featured 23 times in all competitions for his side this term, so far managing to score seven goals while providing another 11 assists.
