Akwa United, Enyimba, Nasarawa United and Warri Wolves will look to kickoff their appearances in Caf club competitions on a sound note this weekend.
Cup champions, Akwa United and Nasarawa United play in the Caf Confederation Cup preliminary round against Vita Club Mokanda and Generation Foot respectively while Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions, Enyimba, face Ugandan champions, Vipers SC and Wolves play hosts to CS de Praia Cruz.
Former African champions, Enyimba, are Nigeria's most experienced side since the turn of the Millenium and will begin with a tricky away game to Vipers SC at the Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium in Kampala this Friday.
The Peoples Elephant go into the game after finishing second in the NPFL Super 4 pre-season tournament scoring five goals in six matches, and that has prompted their head coach, Paul Aigbogun, to play down any talk of going all the way in Africa's premier club competition.
“I never set out to win the Champions League trophy with Enyimba this year. That will be looking too far ahead. My target is to do better than they did last year (when Enyimba was beaten in the first round by Egyptian club Smouha). The target for now is to win our preliminary round tie in the competition and get into the next round,” Aigbogun told supersport.com.
Nasarawa United have moved their home game for the Confederation Cup to the National Stadium in Abuja, where they will play hosts to Generation Foot on Sunday. Midfielder Lordson Ichull, who suffered a knock in the NPFL pre-season tournament has resumed training with the Solid Miners, supersport.com can report.
Akwa United and Wolves play on Saturday and Sunday respectively with the Cup champions making their debut against a tough opposition in Vita Club Mokanda at the Pointe-Noire Stadium.
