Sunderland have axed Adam Johnson after he pleaded guilty for two
separate child sex offences, according to reports.
Johnson was heavily monitored by the media for allegedly
being involved in under-age sexual activity, but he admitted in court on
Wednesday on one count of grooming and another on intercourse with a
15-year-old school girl.
The former Manchester City and Middlesbrough star will
return to court this Friday to begin his trail, and following the news, the
Black Cats immediately released a statement announcing the termination of his
contract.
The 28-year-old was suspended by the club after he was
arrested last March, but Johnson was allowed back into the first-team before
being charged.
He also featured prominently this season, scoring the first
goal in Sunderland’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool from a free kick.
But now his Black Cats career has been ended, with his trial
expected to last two weeks before a final verdict.
